Applicants must be medically qualified with a GMC recognised qualification and should have had some experience in the specialist practice of cardiology over a period of at least six months, before entering the course. Applicants can only be considered on receipt of a completed application form, together with full CV and at least one cardiology reference. Applicants are also asked to complete a short (200-300) word statement indicating, "Why you wish to study for the Diploma in Cardiology" and "How you see the skills and knowledge learnt being used in future practice". This statement should be submitted along with the application.
Objectives The course aims to provide postgraduate students with an intensive education in all aspects of cardiology as currently practised in the UK. The course concentrates on the methods of making a clinical diagnosis and applying appropriate management to adult patients with all forms of heart disease. Contemporary diagnostic techniques are extensively discussed in relation to individual patients as well as a lecture or seminar format. Similarly, patient management is discussed both in the light of current review and as applied to a variety of patients.
Content
The course is structured to include formal lectures and seminars, involvement in group activities of the cardiac department (joint medical/surgical meetings, case discussions involving echocardiography, weekly discussion of current research being carried out in the department, as well as the weekly grand rounds in the department of medicine). Discussion of the key diagnostic areas of invasive and non-invasive cardiology, as well as bedside and outpatient clinical teaching occurs in small groups.
Course timetable
Each term will be organised similarly starting with the joint lecture timetable, which is organised in conjunction with the Diploma courses in Cardiology located at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Dovehouse Street on the Royal Brompton campus. The lecture timetable includes four to six lectures each week and covers cardiac pathology as well as the clinical fields of ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and arrhythmias. Valve disease, cardiomyopathies, hypertension, congenital heart disease and pulmonary vascular disease is also covered. The principles and practical applications of diagnostic techniques including cardiac catheterisation, electrocardiography, exercise testing, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology will be discussed and time will be spent in small groups in each of the key diagnostic areas.
Bedside patient teaching is carried out in small groups and involves daily coronary care unit rounds, dedicated selected patient teaching and attendance on outpatient clinics. Two mornings on each week are dedicated to special case discussion, the medical grand rounds and current research in the department. In addition, there is a weekly joint, medical/surgical case presentation meeting, where the indications and scope of cardiac surgery are discussed.
Assessment
Students are continually assessed and formal examinations are taken during the second term. This formal assessment is a mock examination (marks awarded do not contribute to the final result) which is excellent practice for the final examination.
Career opportunities
The course is intended primarily for overseas doctors who are seeking postgraduate cardiology education in the UK and as a criteria of entry to apply for the MSc in Cardiology.
